As the town slowly became mad from their entrapment, they turned their focus to the mother and her teenage daughter, who had been caught stealing food. Every resident of Springfield was emaciated and short-fused, closing in on Ruth and Laura Powers as they crouched in front of the statue of their town's founder.
Ruth looked about desperately, but she knew that wherever they ran, they would be found. She knew that she hadn't been the best mother; in fact, far from it... She had stolen her ex-husband's car, been imprisoned for using steroids and on top of it all not being there for Laura when she needed her.
And now, Laura needed her more than ever.
And Ruth was there. And she wasn't budging. She protectively held onto her daughter behind her back, feeling the unfamiliar sensation of tears sting her eyes.
Ruth and Laura were both trembling in a heap, as they watched the crowd draw nearer, berating and threatening them.
"Run," Ruth whispered.
"What..? Mom, no, but I.."
Ruth hushed her softly. She focused her stare ahead toward their enemy as a single tear went down her cheek. She gritted her teeth.
"Laura, listen to me... Run. And don't look back."
"I love you, Mom.." Laura whispered, gently hugging Ruth's arm.
"I love you too."
Laura ran as fast as she could. Few chased her, mainly focusing on her mother who had now become the local criminal for trying to survive in this hell.
Ruth didn't stand a chance.
For those of you who don't know, Ruth and Laura Powers are two reoccurring characters in the Simpsons. For those of you who have seen the movie, the situation would make sense to you.
I always liked Ruth and Laura, despite their flaws. Just stunning personalities for two seldom-used characters who more than not appeared as extras.
This is part of a Simpsons fanfic I'm drafting which I hope to be finished with before the year's out.
